And I think it can be really harmful, because it doesn't permit space for a multitude of experiences, some of which can be bad - not because the relationship is a lesbian relationship, but because somebody in the relationship is not well. But I think you have a lot of people sort of translate this into, "women aren't capable of hurting each other," or "women aren't capable of abusing each other." Lesbian relationships are the fantasy, the ideal - I would say that I think lesbians and queer women perpetrate that that idea. But my sort of day-to-day life, I don't really have to deal with it, because I'm married to a woman, and that's just not part of my experience right now, which is actually really lovely. I always talk about how in my relationship, like, obviously the patriarchy affects me in all kinds of ways. There's this idea that not having men present in a relationship takes a certain kind of stress off, which sexually is actually true. Book Reviews 'Her Body And Other Parties:' Be Your Own Madwoman

There was no warning, only a leap in like a flash, a metallic clip of teeth, a leap out equally swift, and Curly’s face was ripped open from eye to jaw. They were camped near the log store, where she, in her friendly way, made advances to a husky dog the size of a full-grown wolf, though not half so large as she. It is true, it was a vicarious experience, else he would not have lived to profit by it. He had never seen dogs fight as these wolfish creatures fought, and his first experience taught him an unforgettable lesson. All was confusion and action, and every moment life and limb were in peril. Here was neither peace, nor rest, nor a moment’s safety. Dane insists on escorting Elizabeth to a press conference because ``I want to know where your mouth is.'' She retorts, ``it won't be kissing your ass.'' The characters are no more agreeable than the plot is focused on finding the murderer. Biography edit Hoag was born in Cresco, Iowa and raised in the small town of Harmony, Minnesota, where her father sold insurance. More than 22 million copies of her books are in print. Dane and Elizabeth start off their eventual romance by treating each other like dirt-exchanging what passes for snappy repartee. Tami Hoag (born Tami Mikkelson January 20, 1959) is an American novelist, best known for her work in the romance and thriller genres. Elizabeth, who now owns the local newspaper, suspects most everyone in town: Jarvis had kept a secret list of names of people who owed him money. Sheriff Dane Jantzen figures the deed was done by a transient: Jarrold's wallet was stolen and his glove compartment rifled. When car trouble strikes, Elizabeth hoofs it to a construction site-and finds the developer, Jarrold Jarvis, in his car with his throat cut. After a messy and very public divorce from her magnate husband, Elizabeth Stuart is persuaded by her old college chum to move from Atlanta to Still Creek, Minn. The exhibition is an evolving archive of American calamity over the last 150 years. This is precisely the American ideal that Carriage Trade’s excellent group show, Model Home (New York), After Wisconsin Death Trip disputes. These pastoral images are anchored in the time period before and after the Great Depression (1929-1939), fitted with narratives including first kisses, first drives, and picnics. These are the perennial images made popular by films, television shows, and politicians who harken back to a bygone America. The mother watches her husband and children from a kitchen window, toiling at baked goods with a smile from lips as red as the hood of her husband’s car. The father, donned in his weekend Gingham, customizes his sports car (it is often cherry-red and surely American - a Chevy or Ford). There subsists an idealized conception of suburban middle America that is utterly familiar: a blanched-white picket fence circumscribes a neatly manicured lawn. She’s a fantastic writer regardless of the setting, but what I love is how vibrant the world around her lesbian characters can be. To me, the historical fiction aspect of Sarah Waters’ writing is part of what makes her work so captivating. Tipping the Velvet and Fingersmith are both set in the same era roughly England during the Industrial Revolution, so I would guess late 19th / very early 20th century. I’ve read her novel Tipping the Velvet and really enjoyed it I’m sorry to say I haven’t read her other books. She writes these amazing lesbian romance / lesfic books set in an England of the past. You’re probably familiar with Sarah Waters (and if you’re not, you should be!). What was I doing until the wee hours of the night (or morning)? Watching Fingersmith, an adaptation of the Sarah Waters novel by the same name. Don’t ask me how I’m functioning today I don’t know the answer. My night owl tendencies got the better of me and I stayed up until 3:30am. |
